A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 6032 (H-1) AS REPORTED FROM COMMITTEE

The Michigan Military Act provides that when the President calls or orders the National Guard into federal service in a time of national emergency or when it appears the National Guard may be called to federal service, the Governor may activate the Michigan Emergency Volunteers as deemed necessary to provide emergency assistance to the state.  When activated, the MEV shall only assist in civil authority missions formerly performed by the National Guard.

The bill would rename the "Michigan Emergency Volunteers" the "Michigan Volunteer Defense Force" and remove the requirement that the National Guard be called into federal service as a condition of activating the defense force.

MCL 32.651

FISCAL IMPACT:

The bill would have no fiscal impact on the state or local governmental units.
