            House Resolution No. 309.

A resolution declaring September 2004 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

            Whereas, Prostate cancer is the second most common malignancy in America, behind skin cancer; and

            Whereas, The most common risk factor of prostate cancer is age.  More than 70 percent of men identified to have prostate cancer are over the age of 65.  African-American males have a higher risk of prostate cancer than white males.  The risk of prostate cancer rises with the number of close relatives who have this disease; and

            Whereas, Prostate cancer is diagnosed every two minutes and forty-five seconds.  Every twenty minutes one male dies of prostate cancer; and

            Whereas, Research suggests that men can reduce their risk of prostate cancer mortality if awareness is increased and recommended prostate cancer screening guidelines are followed; now, therefore, be it

            Resolved by the House of Representative, That the members of this legislative body declare September 2004 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
